Further to the introduction of the Parental Involvement Act in 2006 the Broomlands Primary School Parent Council was created in August 2007 after the Government decided that School Boards appeared to be too formal and should be disbanded. The PTA also came to an end and the two committees joined forces and became the Parent Council.
The objectives of our Parent Council are:
The Parent Council is the “go between” the School and the Parent Forum. (Every parent is automatically a member of the Parent Forum), we have the important role of maintaining and improving the links between the school and all parents ensuring that parents get the information they need about the school and likewise, that the school gets feedback on the views of the parents. The Parent Council will also represent the views of the parents to the Education Authority via various consultations.
We have a general committee who have meetings 3 times a year plus our AGM, these meetings are not too formal and are open to any member of the Parent Forum and the minutes of the meetings are made available for inspection.
The Parent Council at Broomlands Primary also has a number of Sub Groups, these Sub Groups are operated to assist the school in various activities such as maintaining the school garden and assisting with promoting healthy eating through a healthy tuck shop using the skills and talents of the parents who have some free time to spare.
We also have a successful Fund Raising and Events Sub Group who have managed to arrange a number of well supported social events and raised over £3, 000 in its first year. Most of this money was donated back to the school which enabled them to purchase items that they would normally not have been able to get or would have had to wait a while before they could be purchased.
We appreciate that not everyone is keen on the formality of committees and meetings, however, our meetings are not too formal and there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in different ways, for example, helping to organise a social event, baking for a cake and candy stall at the summer fair, giving up some of your spare time to assist with school trips, you may have an unusual hobby or have travelled around the world and are willing to give a talk to the pupils on your adventures and experiences or simply coming along and giving your support at one of the organised events.
We want to offer as many parents & guardians as possible the opportunity to contribute in some way to their child’s school and education.
